What Cieszybor means

Where Cieszybor comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

`Cieszybor` is a Slavic compound built from two old pieces. The first, cieszy, comes from a verb meaning to gladden or take joy. The second, -bor, belongs to the family of borzec, to fight, and it turns up in names like `Dalibor`, `Sambor`, and `Chwalibor`. Put the halves together and the sense is direct: one who enjoys battle, tego, którego cieszy walka.

Names of this dithematic type were given among the early West Slavs long before Christian calendars reached Poland. A parent could not know how a child would grow. The name set a wish for temperament, not a prophecy. `Cieszybor` reads as a boy who would meet a fight gladly rather than flinch from it.

The name is rare now, and it keeps no diminutive of its own. Imagine a teacher reading a class register and pausing before the full four syllables. That pause is part of what the name does today. It stands apart from the `-sław` and `-mir` names that stayed common.

What survives is the plain shape of the meaning: cieszy for joy, -bor for the fight, joined into one who enjoys battle.
