Chris

The name Chris comes from the Greek Christophoros, built from Christos and the verb pherein, to carry. Read literally, it means bearing Christ, and the Polish niosący Chrystusa keeps that sense exact. Long before the short form settled into English, the full name belonged to a saint whose legend gave the meaning a body: Christopher, said to have carried a child across a swollen river. That is why he became the patron of travelers, printed on medals clipped to dashboards.

Chris arrived by clipping. English speakers trimmed the long Greek word down to a single blunt syllable that fits a roll call. It suits a name register read fast on the first day of school.

The short form has its own gravity. It works for a Krzysztof softening his name abroad, or for someone who prefers the plainer sound. What stays underneath is the old freight: bearing Christ.
