Candice comes into English from the Greek Kandake, the name the New Testament gives in Acts 8:27 to the queen of the Ethiopians. Greek writers borrowed the word from a royal title used in the Kingdom of Kush, south of Egypt. Kandake marked the office of queen, held by more than one woman. The Bible carried the word west, and English readers settled first on Candace, later on Candice.
The sense of "clear, pure" was fastened to the name much later. English ears set it beside the Latin candidus, which means white or bright, and the reading stuck. That link is a later association, not the Greek root.
On a Polish class register today, Candice stands among the borrowed names, with no name-day of its own in the calendar. From Greek it brought a queen's title. In English it kept the short reading: clear, pure.
