What Bertrand means

Where Bertrand comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Bertrand comes from two Germanic words, beraht, "bright," and hraban, "raven." Together they read as jasny kruk, a bright raven. The raven was no dark omen to the people who first used the name. In Germanic tradition the bird stood for a sharp eye and a keen mind.

The name found its warmest home in France. A medieval bishop, Saint Bertrand de Comminges, gave his name to a town in the Pyrenees that still bears it. Around 1200 the troubadour Bertrand de Born wrote fierce war poems in Occitan, and Dante later placed him in the Inferno for it. French cinema kept the name in use through the director Bertrand Tavernier.

Polish registers know it too. On a class list or an urząd form, Bertrand stands out among the Marcins and Piotrs. It has no diminutive to soften it. You say the whole thing.

The meaning holds steady: jasny, bright, and kruk, the raven.
