Arnold

Arnold is Germanic to the bone. It joins two old elements, arn, the eagle, and wald, power or rule. Together they give the meaning that has trailed the name for centuries: eagle power. For the people who first shaped it, the eagle stood for sharp sight and command over others.

History gave the name a real bearer worth knowing. Arnold of Soissons, an abbot and bishop in the eleventh century, was later honoured as a patron of brewers, and his memory still circulates in Belgian brewing tradition. The name crossed into England with the Normans, dropped out of common use, and came back.

In a Polish class register today, Arnold sits among names far more common, and the teacher reads it without pause. The eagle behind it stays put. Whatever fashion does to it, the sense holds: siła orła, eagle power.
