Andres

Andres traces back to the Greek Andreas, a name built on the adjective andreios, meaning manly, which itself rests on anḗr, andrós, the ordinary Greek word for a man. The meaning offered here, manly and masculine, sits at the root itself. It did not arrive as a later gloss.

In Spain the form is usually Andrés, carried by fishermen and kings alike since San Andrés, the apostle Andrew, became one of the country's early patrons. Andres, without the accent, travels more lightly across borders and forms.

Picture a name-day list at the urząd, or a class register read aloud in November. A Polish reader will hear Andrzej nearby, the same Greek man standing behind both. Andres keeps the shape plainer. The sense stays fixed: someone described as brave, mężny, manly.
