What Anastazy means
Where Anastazy comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Anastazy comes from the Greek Anastasios, built on the word anastasis, resurrection. The Polish gloss keeps it plain: zmartwychwstanie, a rising again. Early Christians took the word for the Easter morning and turned it into a name for a person.
The name traveled with the early Church. Saint Anastasius the Persian died a martyr. He was a soldier who converted and was killed in the seventh century. Several popes were named Anastasius as well, which fixed the name in the Church calendar and gave it a name-day.
In Poland the masculine Anastazy has kept close company with the feminine Anastazja, and the feminine form has been the more familiar of the two.
On a school register you might find one Anastazy and no other, a boy answering to a word that once meant resurrection.
