What Akim means

Where Akim comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Akim comes from Hebrew. It is a shortened form of Yehoyakim, borne by a king of Judah, and the elements mean something close to "established by God." Russian speakers took it up as Аким, where it settled among peasants and clergy rather than princes.

The meaning stayed legible. "Established by God" was not fastened to the name afterward. The sense sits in the original parts, the divine name joined to a verb for setting firm.

Leo Tolstoy gave the name to a character in his 1886 play "The Power of Darkness." His Akim is a stammering peasant, poor and plain, who keeps pressing for the truth while the people around him lie. The choice fits. A name meaning "established by God" lands on the one honest man in the house.

In a Polish class register the entry would read as an eastern guest among the Jakubs and Piotrs. Poland keeps its own Joachim from the same Hebrew root. Akim is the Russian cousin that held on to the shorter shape. Its meaning in Polish is plain: ustanowiony przez Boga.
