Areta

Areta comes from the Greek word aretē (ἀρετή), which named excellence, the quality that lets a thing do well what it was made to do. Polish holds that sense in two words, cnota and zaleta: virtue and merit.

The Greeks also made aretē a figure. In a fable retold by Xenophon, a woman called Aretē meets the young Heracles where two roads part and offers him the steep one. An abstract noun for goodness became a person, then a name.

In a Polish class register, Areta sits without the diminutives that trail most names here, no shortened form, no cross-gender pair to soften it. Areta stands on its own. What it says, it says plainly: excellence, the Greek aretē behind the Polish cnota.
