Aurel
Barely present in Poland: fewer than 200 men carry it, and most people here have never met one. It has only just started appearing on birth registers, three boys last year, from the Latin for "golden".

What Aurel means
Where Aurel comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Aurel comes from Latin. Its root is aurum, gold, joined to the adjective aureus, golden, which is exactly what the name means. The sense of gold here is literal, a meaning present from the start rather than pinned on later.
The Romans wore Aurelius as a clan name. It marked the gens Aurelia, and its best-known member was Marcus Aurelius, the emperor who wrote his Meditations in Greek between campaigns. The same aureus gave Latin aureola, the gilded ring drawn around a saint's head. From that stem grew the variant Aureli and the feminine Aurelia.
A boy called Aurel today inherits a shorter cut of the word. In a Polish class register it looks brief beside an Aleksander. The fuller Aureli keeps a name-day on 9 September, one of several the calendar allows.
Whatever the form, the Latin underneath reads the same. Golden.
