What Arkady means

Where Arkady comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Arkady begins in Greek, in the name Arkadia, a mountainous region of the Peloponnese. Ancient poets remade that real place into a shepherds' idyll, and the name has meant "from Arcadia" ever since, pochodzący z Arkadii in Polish.

In Russian hands the name grew common and warm. Turgenev gave it to Arkady Kirsanov, the young idealist of Fathers and Sons (1862). Many readers first met the name in that book. It settled easily into Polish soil as well.

Poland knows it mostly as Arkadiusz, with Arek as the everyday short form. A boy signs Arek on the school register and stretches to Arkadiusz on a form at the urząd. Saint Arkadiusz supplies the name-day. The meaning has not moved: from Arcadia.
