Sławek

Sławek grew up as the everyday form of longer Slavic names, the kind built from sława, the old word for glory or fame. Paired with mir, meaning peace, it gives the sense recorded here: glorious peace. Polish keeps grander versions of the same root, like the variant Światosław and its cross-gender partner Światosława, names heavier with ceremony than a boy called Sławek at recess.

The name stays short. On a school register it sits between longer entries, easy to read aloud and quick to answer to. Where the fuller forms suggest a coat of arms, Sławek suggests a friend.

The peace inside the name, that mir, was not always the point.
