Serhiy

Serhiy is the Ukrainian form of a name whose short reading is servant, the one who tends and guards, an opiekun rather than a master. The Slavic root fixes it to work done for others, to care rather than command. The meaning is modest. It names a man by what he keeps.

That plainness has never held the name back. Serhiy Zhadan, born in Starobilsk in 1974, made the form known well past Ukraine's borders as one of the most read poets of his generation, a novelist and musician besides. When a reader in Warsaw or Wrocław meets the name on a book cover, this is often the face behind it.

Across the border the name has a Polish cousin, Sergiusz, whose imieniny fall on the eighth of September and again in October. Serhiy keeps its own spelling and its own ground. On a class register it stands slightly apart from the Polish forms around it, four letters that still mean what the Slavic root gave them: servant, keeper, the one who looks after.
