What Sergo means

Where Sergo comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Sergo comes from Latin, from the cluster of names built on Sergius, an old Roman clan name that the dictionaries call obscure in origin. The meaning attached here, servant and attendant, did not begin as a literal root. It was fastened to the name later, once readers heard in it the plain labor of serving, the Polish sługa, the one who does the work of standing near.

The name points two ways. Servant is one face; strażnik, the watchman, is the other.

In a Polish class register, Sergo would sit among longer, more familiar entries, short and blunt on the page. A servant is not a lesser figure in this reading. The attendant is the one trusted to stay close, to keep watch, to wait without leaving the post. Whatever else a name gathers around itself, the Latin ground here holds firm, and so does that single sense: servant, attendant, sługa.
