What Serena means

Where Serena comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Serena comes from the Latin `serenus`, a word Romans used for a clear sky and settled weather. From that root the name took its meaning: serene, tranquil, clear. The adjective described calm air before it ever described a calm person.

One of the first women to carry it was Serena of Rome, niece of the emperor Theodosius I and wife of the general Stilicho. She died in 408. Long after her, the name settled comfortably in Italian, where the ending `-a` marks it plainly as feminine, and it later found a home in English too. Serena Williams has kept it familiar to English speakers for decades.

On a Polish class register, Serena still reads as an import rather than a native form. It has no Polish diminutives of its own. The name stays close to its Latin shape. Say it and you are back at `serenus`, clear weather.
