What Sebastien means
Where Sebastien comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Sébastien is the French form of a name that started as a place. In Greek, Sebastia named a city in Asia Minor, and its people were the Sebastianoi, the ones from Sebastia. Behind the town sat the word sebastos, meaning venerable, the Greek match for the Latin imperial title Augustus. The short meaning, venerable, comes straight from that root rather than from later legend.
The name traveled on the story of a saint. Sebastian was a Roman soldier and martyr of the third century, later made patron of archers. His feast falls on 20 January, still marked as the imieniny in Polish calendars.
French speakers softened the Latin Sebastianus into Sébastien. The variant Sebastian stayed closer to that Latin spelling, and Polish speakers clipped both to Seba on the register and in the schoolyard. Open a class list in Warsaw and you may find Sebastian written in full and answered to as Seba.
The word underneath still means venerable.
