Salomon

Salomon comes from Hebrew, from Shlomo, built on the root shalom, which means peace. In Polish that peace is pokój. The name belonged first to a king. Solomon, son of David, ruled in Jerusalem and became the biblical figure people named when they meant wisdom.

For a long stretch Salomon lived mostly in Jewish families across Poland, where it ranked among the ordinary, expected given names. It surfaced among Christians too, since the Old Testament kept feeding names into both worlds. The tie to peace was never decorative. It sits in the root itself, in shalom.

The name keeps no diminutive. On a register at the urząd it stands at full length, Salomon, with nowhere to shrink to. That formality is part of how it reads now, weighty and a little old, closer to a document than a nickname. What holds under it is the plain thing the root always said: pokój, peace.
