Rymma reaches Polish from the Greek-speaking Christian east, and its short meaning points toward Rome: a woman of that city, a Roman. The name traveled with the church rather than the empire, which is how a Latin idea came to be carried in Greek dress.
In Orthodox tradition the name belongs first to a martyr. Rimma was one of the early disciples said to have followed the Apostle Andrew, remembered in the calendar beside two companions. Here is the odd turn. That Rimma was a man. The name crossed over to women later, chiefly in Ukrainian and Russian usage, and it survives today as a woman's name.
