What Rufina means

Where Rufina comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Rufina comes from Latin, from the family of Rufus and Rufinus, a name given to someone red-haired. The root simply described colour. A Roman with reddish hair could be called Rufus, and Rufina turned that into a woman's name. Its short meaning in Polish is rudowłosa, red-haired in English.

The name traveled with Spanish tradition. Saints Justa and Rufina, two potters, were martyred in Seville around the year 287 and became patrons of the city. Painters like Murillo and Goya later gave Rufina her own canvases, usually holding clay pots. Seville remembers her still.

The masculine variant is Rufin. On a Polish class register, a Rufina sits apart, one of the rarer entries. The name says red-haired, the same sense as the Latin rufus.
