What Roxanna means

Where Roxanna comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Roxanna reaches Polish through Greek, where Rhoxane gave shape to an older eastern word for the shining dawn. The meaning stayed close to that light: bright, shining, dawn. In Polish the same sense reads as jaśniejąca, jutrzenka.

The best-known bearer married Alexander the Great. Roxana of Bactria became his queen around 327 BC, and Greek writers fixed her name in the histories. Centuries later the name moved into English books and songs, which is where its English color comes from. Edmond Rostand gave his heroine the form Roxane in Cyrano de Bergerac. Daniel Defoe titled a whole novel Roxana in 1724.

Polish usage keeps it too, most often as the variant Roksana. A teacher reading a class register might land on Roksana, one bright name among the plainer ones. The sense holds: jaśniejąca, bright dawn.
