Rodrigo

Rodrigo reached Spanish through the Latin Rodericus, a name of Gothic descent that had come to mean famous ruler. The Latin form was the one clerks and chroniclers wrote down, and it is the ancestor every modern Rodrigo can trace. The meaning is famous ruler.

Spain gave the name two figures who fixed it in memory. Roderic, the last Visigothic king, lost his crown and his life around 711 at the Battle of Guadalete, and tradition kept calling him Rodrigo long afterward.
