Quốc Việt

Quốc Việt is a Vietnamese boy's name built from two Sino-Vietnamese elements. Quốc means country or nation, and traces back to the character 國. Việt names the Viet people, the character 越. The name reads as the Vietnamese nation. The origin here is classed as "other," meaning it sits outside the Latin and Slavic roots that fill most Polish name registers.

The word Việt does real work outside personal names. It stands in the country's own name, Việt Nam, so a child called Quốc Việt shares a syllable with the state on every map. Older histories also record the Lạc Việt, one of the peoples counted among the ancestors of modern Vietnam. That gives the second half of the name a documented past, not a decorative one.
