What Quentin means

Where Quentin comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Quentin comes from the Latin Quintinus, a form built on Quintus, the Roman name for a fifth child or a child born in the fifth month. The short meaning stays close to that root: fifth. Rome handed the number down as a name, and it kept traveling long after the counting stopped.

In the third century a missionary called Quintinus was martyred in Roman Gaul. The town where he died took his name and is still called Saint-Quentin today, in the Picardy region of northern France. His feast falls on the 31st of October. That French thread is why the name reads as French to many ears.

English took it up as well. Walter Scott used it for his 1823 novel Quentin Durward, about a young Scottish archer in the French court. Later the illustrator Quentin Blake gave it a lighter face.

A Polish child named Quentin hears the number each time a teacher reads the class register aloud. The name means fifth, and it has meant so since Rome.
