What Parviz means

Where Parviz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Parviz comes from Persian. In Middle Persian the word "Parwēz" meant victorious and fortunate, a name for the one who keeps coming out ahead. Its most famous bearer wore it as a royal title. Khosrow II, the Sasanian king who reigned from 590 to 628, was remembered as Khosrow Parviz, "the ever-victorious."

The meaning holds two things at once. Victorious, and fortunate. Persian poets kept both alive long after the king's empire fell, and the name stayed in use across Iran and lands to the east. It never settled into Polish tradition, so it brings no name-day of its own to the calendar.

On a Polish school register, Parviz stands out. It usually marks a family with roots in Iran or Central Asia. The name has no Polish diminutive and no local variant. It stays as written: Parviz, victorious and fortunate.
