What Olimpiada means

Where Olimpiada comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The root of Olimpiada is Greek, Olympos, the mountain the old Greeks made home for their gods. The Polish gloss is plain: mieszkanka Olimpu, a woman of Olympus. English keeps the same address, from Mount Olympus.

The name has an old owner. Olympias was the mother of Alexander the Great, a queen in the Macedonian court. Centuries later a second Olympias, a deaconess in Constantinople, gave away her fortune and corresponded with John Chrysostom. The Orthodox Church remembers her as a saint, and that is how the name traveled east into Russian and Ukrainian use.

There it settled. Russian and Ukrainian families read Olimpiada through the church calendar, where Saint Olympias has her feast day. Picture the name today on an official form at the urząd, written out full where a Polish diminutive would sit for other names. Olimpiada has none of those. It stands as it came from the mountain, mieszkanka Olimpu.
