Meaning & Origin

What Roger means

Where Roger comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Roger begins in Germanic speech, in the compound Hrodgar, from hrod meaning fame and ger meaning spear. Put together they give the sense recorded on this page: famous spear, or in Polish sławna włócznia. The name belonged to warriors first, men whose reputation traveled ahead of their weapons.

The Normans carried it across the Channel after 1066, and it settled into English and French use, where it has stayed. Roger of Sicily, a Norman count, ruled the island in the eleventh century. Roger Bacon, the thirteenth-century English friar and scholar, gave the name a bookish afterlife.

In a Polish school register Roger sits among Polish forms without asking for special treatment. It reads foreign and yet plain. The name keeps no diminutives of its own, no softened variant to hide behind, which makes it unusually direct. A boy called Roger carries the older meaning whether he knows it or not: fame joined to a spear.
