Abdullah

Abdullah comes from Arabic, formed from two elements: 'abd, meaning servant, and Allah, God. Set side by side as 'Abd Allah, they name a servant of God. Polish renders this as sługa boga.

The construction belongs to a whole family of Arabic names that pair 'abd with a name for the divine, and Abdullah is the plainest of them, since it uses the word God itself. Its most famous early bearer was Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the father of the Prophet Muhammad, who died before his son was born. From there the name spread with Islam across three continents, and it has stayed one of the most common male names in the Arabic-speaking world for more than a thousand years.

In Poland the name arrives with families whose roots run past the Vistula, into North Africa, the Middle East, or the Balkans.

On a school register it may sit between a Kacper and a Nikola, the only line that asks a Polish teacher to slow down. Whatever the spelling on the form at the urząd, the meaning holds firm: servant of God, sługa boga.
