Makaria came out of Greek, from the adjective makários, blessed and happy. The name states its meaning plainly. A Polish reader would render it szczęśliwa, błogosławiona. Few Greek names wear their sense this openly.
The same root opens the Beatitudes. In the Greek of Matthew, each blessing begins makarioi, blessed are those, and Makaria stands on that word. Greek myth also gave the name a bearer: Makaria, a daughter of Heracles, remembered in Athenian tradition for giving her own life to save her kin.
In Poland the name is rare. Enter it on a class register and it would sit alone, the only Makaria in the room. It has no Polish diminutive of its own and no settled variant, so it stays as it arrived, four syllables, unchanged.
