What Kamel means

Where Kamel comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Kamel arrives in Polish through Latin. A real man carried a version of it: Georg Josef Kamel, a Jesuit botanist born in Brno in 1661, who spent years cataloguing the plants of the Philippines. Scholars latinised his surname to Camellus. When Linnaeus classified a glossy Asian shrub in 1753, he called it Camellia, after Kamel. The flower still keeps his name.

The sound of Kamel also runs close to Arabic. Kamal and Kamil there mean perfect and complete, and a Polish ear often catches that sense first. The two lines never merged, yet they share the same short spelling.

On a Polish class register the name looks brief and unadorned. It has no diminutive, no feminine pair. It holds two stories: a botanist's Latin surname and the Arabic word for complete. Today people read it simply, as perfect and complete.
