What Jacopo means

Where Jacopo comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Jacopo comes from Latin Iacobus, the church-Latin form of Hebrew Ya'aqov. The old sense reaches back to the heel. The newborn Jacob gripped his twin brother's heel, and the name grew to mean the one who supplants. Italian took Iacobus and split it along two roads. One led to Giacomo. The other gave Jacopo.

The name belongs to Italian art. Jacopo Tintoretto signed his Venetian canvases with it in the sixteenth century. Jacopo Peri, a Florentine, wrote the music for Dafne around 1598, counted by many as the first opera. Jacopo Bellini and Jacopo Sannazaro carried it before them.

The Polish gloss, trzymający piętę, holds that first picture of the grasping heel. Podstępny, the crafty one, is a later reading laid over the story of Jacob taking his brother's place. Supplanter is the plain English word for it, the name of the one who steps into another's spot.
