Ivane
The Georgian form of John, from the Hebrew Yohanan, "God is gracious." In Poland it stays a curiosity: about 280 men carry it, and most Poles will never meet one.
Ivane Pronunciation
What Ivane means
Where Ivane comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Ivane begins in Hebrew, in the older name Yohanan, meaning "God is gracious." The same root produced John across much of Europe, and Ivane is the form it took in Georgia. So the name reaches Polish ears from Hebrew by way of the Caucasus.
The meaning stays plain. "God is gracious" reads almost like an answer to a question. That sense belonged to the name from the start rather than arriving as decoration later. Real men have carried it, among them Ivane Mkhargrdzeli, a general and statesman who commanded Queen Tamar's army for close to three decades and died in 1227.
On a Polish class register, Ivane would stand out. It lacks the ending Polish gave to Jan, its home-grown cousin from the same Hebrew source. Read the name and you find a short line of Hebrew underneath: God is gracious.
How many people are named Ivane
1 in 76236 men in Poland is named Ivane. 280 people carry it in the 2025 register: rank #1818 among male names.
