Irmgard

Irmgard comes from old Germanic vocabulary, joining irmin, a word for the whole or the universal, with gard, an enclosure that shields what stands inside it. Put together, the two pieces give the meaning carried on this Polish site: universal protection.

The first element, irmin, once named something vast in early Germanic belief, a greatness spread wide over the world. German bearers gave the name its home. It stayed a German name across the following centuries, more common among women born in the early twentieth century than among those born later.

Say the name once. It is blunt and short in the mouth, two hard syllables that close on the guarding gard.

On a Polish class register today, Irmgard would sit apart from the Zuzannas and Julias around it, a German form set among Polish ones. What it announces is plain: universal protection.
