Hygin

Most Poles have never met a Hygin: the name is close to vanishing, and no boy has been given it in years. It comes from the Greek hygies, healthy, the same root that gives us the word hygiene.

What Hygin means

Where Hygin comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Hygin comes from Greek, from hygies, meaning healthy. The same root gives English the word hygiene. The name held a wish for soundness of body long before it reached Polish registers.

The best documented bearer is Pope Hyginus, a philosopher from Athens who led the early Church around 138 to 142. His feast falls on 11 January, and Polish calendars mark that date as the imieniny for Hygin. The name never gathered a heavy legend around it. It stayed rare. It stayed close to its plain sense.

There is also the variant higin, the same name with the y softened out. In a school register the two forms can look almost like twins.

The meaning here needs no later story. Greek said hygies, Polish says zdrowy, and both mean healthy.
