What Hnat means

Where Hnat comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The name Hnat comes into Polish from Ukrainian, where it is the local form of Ignacy. Behind it stands the Latin Ignatius, tied by old grammarians to ignis, the word for fire. This is where the sense of "fiery" attaches, a meaning read back through Latin rather than born in Slavic soil. Ukrainian speakers reshaped the sound until Ignatius became Hnat, hard and short.

The name belongs to real people. Hnat Khotkevych, the Ukrainian writer and bandura player, carried it into the twentieth century before his death in 1938. Hnat Yura, an actor and theatre director, gave it a place on the Kyiv stage. Through them the name kept its footing among Ukrainians on both sides of the Polish border.

In a Polish class register today the name looks foreign, four letters with no soft vowel to open it. It has no diminutive of its own in Polish use. What it offers is the older meaning, fire, ognisty, standing plainly behind Hnat.
