What Heidi means

Where Heidi comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Heidi comes from the Germanic name Adelheid, and it carries a plain meaning: noble one, of noble birth. The root is the old Germanic word adal, meaning noble. It began as a short, affectionate form and then set out on its own as a full name. A small, warm word still holds an old claim to rank.

In 1881 the Swiss writer Johanna Spyri published a novel called simply Heidi. The orphan girl at its centre made the name known far past German-speaking towns. Readers met a child of the Alps, and the name traveled with her into dozens of languages.

In a Polish class register, Heidi sits among the Zosias and Amelias, short and easy to read out. The German association stays audible. On an official form at the urząd, someone might add the Polish gloss beside it: szlachetnego rodu, of noble birth.
