What Gawin means

Where Gawin comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Gawin holds two origins at once. The spelling given here rests on Celtic ground, near the Welsh Gwalchgwyn, the older shape behind Gawain, the Round Table knight and nephew of King Arthur. Its short meaning runs a second route. It points to the Latin Gabinum, a town in old Italy, and to Gabinus, "the one from Gabinum". Polish took the sound and kept the older Arthurian pull inside it.

That Latin line has a real bearer. Saint Gabinus was a martyr on Sardinia in the second century, and his memory carried the name into Christian calendars. From there Gawin reached Poland, where the boy who holds it now marks his imieniny on 19 February and again on 30 May.

Picture a school register in a Polish first grade. A teacher reads down the list and reaches Gawin, one name among the Jakubs and Szymons. The child answers. The Celtic root and the Latin Gabinum sit quietly under that single word, unheard by the class. What the register shows is short and plain: Gawin, "pochodzący z Gabinum".
