What Gajusz means

Where Gajusz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Gajusz comes from the Latin Gaius, one of the oldest Roman first names. Its meaning was long debated. Some scholars link it to the verb gaudeo, "I rejoice," and read the name as the one who gladdens his parents. That sense of rejoicing is a later reading, attached to a name whose earliest roots may be Etruscan. The joy came to the name. It did not start there.

Rome wrote Gaius as a single letter, C. The abbreviation kept an old sound, since C once stood for a hard g. Behind that letter stood emperors and ordinary men.

In Poland the name found a Christian patron. Saint Gajusz, a third-century pope and martyr, gives the name its imieniny on 22 April. A boy named Gajusz on a school register today stands in a very long line.

The Polish gloss is plain: cieszący rodziców. To rejoice.
