What Gagik means

Where Gagik comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Gagik is an Armenian name, and Armenia is where its history is easiest to follow. The short meaning given for it in Polish is „mały król", little king, while in English it points to a peak or summit. Two readings, one on a throne and one on a mountain.

The best documented Gagik ruled Bagratid Armenia from 989 to 1020. Gagik I ordered the church of Saint Gregory at Ani, and the architect Trdat built it between 1001 and 1005. An earthquake brought it down within a few years. The foundations were dug up again in the early twentieth century.

The name stayed male and stayed Armenian. No standard Polish diminutive or feminine form has grown around it. A child entered as Gagik in a Warsaw class register carries a name that means little king in Polish and summit in English.
