Francy

Francy grows from Latin, from the same stock as Franciscus. That older word named a Frank, one of the people who settled Gaul, and so it came to mean a Frenchman. The Latin points plainly west, toward France.

The second meaning, the free one, was attached later. The Franks were counted among the free, and their name drifted toward the idea of freedom. Francy holds both readings, francuz and wolny człowiek, without choosing between them.

Around Francy stands a whole family. Frania and Franka are the small, warm diminutives. Franciszka is the fuller variant, and the cross-gender pair Franciszek and Franek carry the same root into masculine names. On a Polish school register, a Francy sits close to a Franek by alphabet and by blood. The name still says what it said in Latin: Frenchman, free one.
