Wirginia grows from the Latin virgo, in the genitive virginis, a word that meant maiden or unmarried young woman. The Polish gloss is dziewica. In Rome the same root gave a family name, the gens Verginia, so the name worked as a marker of kin before it settled into a marker of meaning.
Livy tells of one Verginia, a girl whose father killed her rather than surrender her to the decemvir Appius Claudius. That scene sat in Roman schoolbooks for a long time. Whether it is history or near-legend, it tied the name to the idea of a daughter's freedom.
