Luisa

Luisa is the feminine form of Luis, and it reaches back to the Latin Ludovicus. That older name meant famous warrior, the fame of someone whose name was known across a battlefield. From Ludovicus came the Spanish Luis and the Italian Luigi, and from those the rounder, softer Luisa.

In Spain and Italy the name became domestic and warm, a favourite in Catholic households where Santa Luisa de Marillac, the seventeenth-century founder of shelters for the poor, gave it a name-day and a model. The warrior sense faded into the background. What stayed was the sound.

Polish speakers know it too, usually in the variant Luiza. On a class register the two spellings sit close together. Luisa keeps its Italian and Spanish colour, while Luiza looks more at home in Polish. Either way the root is the same fighter, and the meaning underneath stays sławna wojowniczka: famous warrior.
