Kazimiera

Kazimiera comes from Old Slavic roots. The name pairs a verb of destroying, from the element kaziti, with mirъ, meaning peace. Read plainly, that gives the striking gloss handed down to Polish parents: destroyer of peace. The Polish reading softens the target of that destruction into the peace of one's enemies, so the fierceness points outward rather than at the household.

Kazimiera is the feminine of Kazimierz, and it shares that name's most famous bearer. Saint Casimir, the fifteenth-century prince, became a patron of Poland and Lithuania, which spread the masculine form far. The women's version followed. In daily use it shortens to Kazik, the same affectionate clip a Kazimierz answers to.

The name has two imieniny in Poland, March 4 and March 22, so a Kazimiera gets her greeting early in spring.

Do not mistake the meaning for a curse. A warlike gloss on a Slavic name usually promised strength to the family that gave it, protection turned against outsiders. Say the full name on a class register and it sounds formal. Say Kazik and it sounds like someone you know. Both hold the old sense: a peace-breaker, aimed at the enemy.
