Ernestyna

Ernestyna comes from a Germanic root, the old word ernust, which meant seriousness and firm resolve. That same root produced the English adjective earnest, a distant cousin the name still keeps close. So the meaning of Ernestyna sits near the surface: poważna, stanowcza, serious in temperament.

Its closest relative in Polish is Ernest, the masculine variant. The two names share everything but the ending, and Polish families have used them side by side for a long time. Ernestyna adds a couple of syllables and a feminine close, while the grave old root underneath stays the same. Everyday speech wears the name down to Erna, or to the warmer Ernestynka.

The sense of steadiness was not stitched on later. It arrived with the word. A Polish calendar hands Ernestyna two name-days, the 14th of April and the 22nd of November, so twice a year someone might raise a glass and mean every serious letter of it. What they toast is the plain old root: earnest.
