What Delfina means

Where Delfina comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Delfina comes from the Greek word delphís, which means dolphin. In Polish the sense stays plain: delfin, the animal itself. The origin sits near the surface.

The name reached Poland mostly in the nineteenth century and stayed rare there. Its best-known bearer is Delfina Potocka, an aristocrat and gifted singer whom Fryderyk Chopin and the poet Zygmunt Krasiński counted among their closest friends. Chopin dedicated his Waltz in D-flat major, the one nicknamed the Minute Waltz, to her. Through her, the Polish form held a place in the country's cultural memory while the name kept its scarcity.

Delfina has two name-days, on 26 November and on 9 December. At an imieniny a girl might gather both dates, one in late autumn, one closer to winter. The pull toward the sea does not let go. Behind every Delfina swims the Greek delphís, the dolphin.
