Cyryla descends from the Greek Kyrillos, a name built on kyrios, the word for "lord". The root is a single Greek word. In Poland the masculine Cyryl is the form people recognise, tied to Saint Cyril, who with his brother Methodius shaped an alphabet for the Slavs. Cyryla takes that same root and turns it toward a woman.
The Greek kyria named the lady or mistress of a household, the one who held authority there. The Polish gloss stays close: pani, władczyni. The same kyrios sounds in the old prayer Kyrie eleison, "Lord, have mercy". So the short English meaning, "lord", becomes in her something nearer to a woman who governs.
