What Anastassiya means
Where Anastassiya comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Anastassiya comes from the Greek anastasis, resurrection. The root names a rising up, the same word early Christians used for what happened after the cross. From it Polish gives Anastazja, and the cross-gender Anastazy for a boy.
The name traveled with the church. Saint Anastasia, a martyr venerated since the fourth century, kept the meaning alive in the calendar, and her feast falls on December 25. In Polish homes the diminutive shortens to Nastka or Nastusia.
The sense of resurrection sits oddly on a newborn, yet it has never left the name. Anastassiya is the eastern spelling, closer to Russian and Ukrainian usage than the Polish Anastazja. A teacher reading a class register might pause at the double s before saying it right.
It means rising again. That double consonant marks it as a form carried west rather than the native Anastazja.
