What Fedora means

Where Fedora comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Fedora begins in Greek. It is a form of Theodora, built from theos, god, and doron, gift. Read straight across, the name means gift of god, in Polish dar boży. From Byzantine Greek it passed into Russian, where it stands as the feminine of Fyodor. Italy kept a version too.

The name carries a documented theatrical past. In 1882 Victorien Sardou wrote the play Fédora for Sarah Bernhardt, who played the Russian princess Fédora Romazov. The soft-brimmed hat worn in that role took the name fedora, which is why an English word for headgear shares a root with a Greek word for God's gift. Umberto Giordano turned the same play into an opera, Fedora, first staged in Milan in 1898.

So a Greek meaning sits inside a Russian heroine inside an Italian score.

In a Polish class register the name would read as foreign, closer to Teodora, its home-grown cousin. A child called Fedora answers to something Greek in origin, Russian by long habit, and stamped onto a hat since 1882. The plain sense stays fixed underneath. Gift of god.
