One woman fixed the name in history. Aelia Eudocia, wife of the emperor Theodosius II, was born a pagan named Athenais in Athens, daughter of a philosopher who raised her on Homer. She took Eudocia at her baptism, married in 421, and later wrote more than two thousand lines of Greek verse stitched from Homer's own lines.
