What Estelle means

Where Estelle comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Estelle comes from the Latin `stella`, star. French speakers took the word and made it a name, and the variants Estella and Estela keep the same root in view.

There was a Sainte Estelle, honored on 11 May, remembered as a young martyr near Saintes in Gaul. The Provençal poet Frédéric Mistral chose her as patron of his Félibrige movement in 1854 and fixed her name in the Latinized form Estelle. Through him it reached far past the Charente.

The meaning held: star. In 2012 the Swedish crown named a princess Estelle, now second in line to the throne. On a Polish class register the name would sit beside its variants Estella and Estela, all pointing back to `stella`.
