What Esmeralda means

Where Esmeralda comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Esmeralda begins in Latin, where the word `smaragdus` named a green gemstone. Spanish reshaped it into esmeralda, the ordinary term for emerald, the stone Poland calls szmaragd. The origin is a mineral, not a virtue.

The name reached wide audiences through a book. Victor Hugo gave his dancer the name in Notre-Dame de Paris, published in 1831, and Esmeralda walked out of that novel into the rest of Europe. Readers who never mined a gem still pictured the green stone.

In Spain and Latin America the name kept its plain sense. A girl called Esmeralda is, on the page of any dictionary, an emerald.

On a Polish class register it looks foreign. It is a rare entry. Set beside Zuzanna and Julia, the name points back to the Latin `smaragdus` that means emerald.
